ZoneTwo vs · TrainingPeaks
Human coach vs AI coach.
Quick verdict
Pick TrainingPeaks if you have (or are hiring) a human coach. The platform is built around the coach-athlete workflow: the coach plans, you execute, the coach reviews. The dashboard is excellent and the ecosystem is deep.
Pick ZoneTwoif you don’t want to hire a human coach — either because it’s too expensive, because you don’t need one for your goals, or because you want availability ZoneTwo offers (24/7 chat, automatic weekly review). We’re not trying to be TrainingPeaks without a coach. We’re trying to be the coach itself.
Side-by-side
What TrainingPeaks does better
- Human judgement in the loop.A real coach can see technique issues, hear about a rough week at work, adjust race strategy, and hold you accountable. AI can’t match that kind of judgement yet.
- Workout builder + library.Decades of curated structured workouts from professional coaches. Our AI writes them, but doesn’t give you a library to browse.
- Device ecosystem.Structured workouts push directly to Garmin, Wahoo, Zwift. We don’t do this yet.
- Coach-client workflow tooling. If you’re coaching others, TrainingPeaks is the standard. We don’t serve coaches.
- Deep analytics for coaches. PMC customization, performance metrics, long-term planning tools.
What ZoneTwo does better
- Price.Free during beta, a small subscription afterward. You don’t pay a coach separately.
- Availability. The AI is awake at 5am and at 11pm. Your human coach replies when they reply.
- Consistency. Every weekly review follows the same rigorous structure. Human coaches have varying care and effort week to week.
- Ground-truth safety rules. Acute spikes, monotony, cross-sport overload detected deterministically before the AI writes anything.
- Conversational follow-ups.Ask “why was today hard?” at midnight, get a grounded answer. Most coaches don’t offer that.
- Multi-sport modeling out of the box.Human coaches often specialize in one sport; cross-sport load modeling isn’t always their bread and butter.
Who should pick which
- Elite amateur, $10k race budget, trying for Kona or a national podium? Hire a human coach, use TrainingPeaks. No AI is worth risking your peak year.
- Amateur with a sub-3 marathon goal, training 5–8h/wk, can’t justify $300/mo? Try ZoneTwo first. Hire a human only if the AI plateaus you.
- Returning from injury, need data-driven structure? ZoneTwo. Our rule engine is conservative and will not push through warning signs.
- Triathlete with all three sports, no personal coach? ZoneTwo — multi-sport modeling is core, not an afterthought.
- Training two people or a team? TrainingPeaks — we don’t serve coaches.
Common questions
FAQCan ZoneTwo replace a human TrainingPeaks coach?
For many amateur athletes, yes — especially if the reason you don't have a coach is price rather than need. ZoneTwo delivers the two things a coach actually does most weeks: a structured review of what happened and a plan for what's next. Where a human still wins: technique correction, emotional support during rough seasons, and the judgement calls that come from knowing you as a person. If you're chasing a Kona slot or a national podium, hire the human. For everyone else, try the AI first.
Does ZoneTwo import TrainingPeaks workouts?
Not directly. ZoneTwo reads completed activities from Strava, and most Garmin/Wahoo devices push executed workouts to both TrainingPeaks and Strava automatically. So if you're executing a TrainingPeaks plan on a head unit that syncs to Strava, ZoneTwo sees the workouts. What we don't do is pull planned workouts out of TrainingPeaks — our plan is the plan, built weekly from your data.
How much cheaper is ZoneTwo than a TrainingPeaks coach?
Dramatically. TrainingPeaks Premium is roughly $20/month. A human coach using TrainingPeaks typically charges $150–400/month on top of that. ZoneTwo is free during beta, and we intend to price well below even the platform fee alone — closer to a single-sport app than a coaching relationship. The math works out to 10–20× savings versus a human-coach setup.
Who should still use TrainingPeaks over ZoneTwo?
Athletes who already work with (or want to work with) a human coach. Coaches managing multiple athletes. Elite amateurs with a peak year and a real budget. Teams or clubs with group training structures. TrainingPeaks is the best tool in the world for the coach-athlete workflow; we don't try to serve that market and we don't serve coaches. If you're the athlete-with-a-coach, stay on TrainingPeaks.
